Scholl ADU - Custom Architecture In Progress

Scholl ADU

Santa Cruz, CA

The Scholl ADU project transforms an underutilized detached garage into a versatile Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) through a thoughtful interior conversion and a modest 150-square-foot addition. The design responds to the client's need for a flexible living space capable of hosting visiting family, generating supplemental income, and ultimately serving as an independent, aging-in-place sanctuary.

By adaptively reusing the existing structure, the project prolongs the material life cycle of the original building and significantly minimizes the resource footprint of new construction. Prioritizing long-term accessibility, the slab-on-grade foundation eliminates the mobility barriers typical of traditional raised-floor homes, seamlessly integrating universal design features to support graceful, transitionary living.

The project has received full approval, with construction anticipated to commence in the summer of 2026.
